What is a Flash Tattoo?

Flash tattoos are traditionally sheets of pre-drawn designs displayed in a portfolio, or more commonly, on the walls of tattoo shops.

Tattooists of the early 1930’s were so inundated with requests that it was difficult for them to keep up with the demand for new designs. The exchange of flash during the late 19th and early 20th centuries helped artists keep up with the growing marketplace. Designs were intentionally kept simple, at a set size and price in an effort to further increase the speed of application and enable an artist to accommodate more clients.
