Nostril

Nose piercing has been around for centuries. While its popularity waned over time, this type of piercing has steadily become more in demand since the middle of the 20th century. Once considered a form of body ornamentation that only people on the fringe would consider, nose piercing is now one of the most sought-after choices for North Americans in the 21st century.

One thing that many people don’t understand about nose piercing in Toronto is that there are several variations to consider. You can have your nostrils pierced, opting for either a high or a low piercing. Another option is to have the septum pierced. There’s also the bridge and the tip of the nose to consider. It’s really up to you.

Even as nostril and other forms of nose piercing have gained in popularity, the number of people who claim that they know how to do the work has increased. Not all of them have undergone the training necessary to ask the right questions, help clients make informed decisions, and actually perform the piercing safely.

If you want to get your nose pierced, make sure you are going to someone with the proper training and experience with the type of piercing that you want. Your best bet is to go to a studio known for doing quality tattoo and piercing work, one that only hires the best.

Piercing Location

To achieve a nostril piercing, the crease of the left or right nostril is carefully perforated, in a spot carefully designated by your piercing professional. Every individual’s unique face and nose shape lends way to different placements. Any part of the nostril itself can be pierced, all the way to the dimple. During your appointment, there will be an opportunity to have your piercer help you choose the perfect location if you haven’t selected one yet. One quick and easy way is to show your piercer a big happy smile, and this will help make the ideal spot pop.

A small dot can be placed in the selected location prior to piercing, so you can really be sure of it before committing. Take a good look in the mirror and envision what your finished piercing will look like, as there is no harm in taking your time with the process. There is no right or wrong side of the nose to pierce, just whichever fits the aesthetic you desire.

Since this piercing is meant to last, all that matters is that you are happy with how it sits on your face. On occasion people also choose to get both nostrils pierced!

Jewelry Options

Your piercer will guide you through the exciting process of selecting your favourite piece of jewelry. Nostril piercing jewelry style options include: captive bead rings, nostril rings and studs. Black Line Studio does not advise removal of jewelry for at least 6 to 8 weeks post your piercing service. Whether before or after the piercing is completely healed, when it comes to changing the jewelry, we recommend that you consult with your piercer

Aftercare

When following Black Line Studio’s after care protocol, the healing time for a conch piercing is typically 6 to 8 months. It is important to keep in mind that these times are estimates based on averages, and everyone’s body heals differently. Individual nostril piercings are meant to last, yet proper care and attention are necessary to ensure the process goes smoothly. You can use saline solution or warm water with salt to regularly rinse the area, including before bed. Keeping your new piercing clean and free of harmful bacteria is vital. Otherwise, you can risk losing the piercing, and even damaging the skin in the area permanently!

Smoking can be harmful during the healing window, and also lead to infection, and potentially, rejection of the piercing. Do not touch the piercing with your hands, and keep the area free of products such as sunscreen, lotion, or makeup that may cause irritation. Be careful not to disturb or tug at the piercing, as this will cause irritation and discomfort.

In the initial week following your piercing procedure, do expect a small amount of tenderness and swelling in the area. If there is continued redness, swelling and pain at the piercing site, an infection is likely, and should be addressed promptly. The jewelry used by your piercer should be kept in until the site has completely healed. In the instance there is any rejection of the jewelry during the healing process, it will need to be removed.

Frequently Asked Questions

The piercing itself is a swift pinch that typically hurts less than many other types of facial piercings. Just like with healing, everybody is different. Some have a higher threshold for pain, while others report a fair amount of tenderness after that initial poke. Although more pain is common during the healing process itself, this can be mitigated with proper care and cleaning. If you catch a cold or develop allergies during the healing window, there can be some extra pain as well. Sneezing can also be uncomfortable, although the piercing should simply be sore after a few weeks have passed.

The most common location for a nostril piercing is along the natural crease line on the side of the nose. A nostril piercing has a lot of flexibility in this area for placement, and the correct side is wherever you decide it will look best! Spend some time deciding the exact location for your piercer to puncture prior to going ahead with the piercing. Since a nostril piercing is meant to last, it’s very important to be sure you like the placement before proceeding.

While the average healing time for a nostril piercing is about three months, everyone’s body heals differently. The most important thing is to keep the piercing site clean and free of harmful irritants like dirt, makeup, and skin products. While the urge to play with your new jewelry can be enticing, avoid touching the piercing until fully healed.

Some swelling during the initial phase of healing is natural, although if the area becomes exceedingly painful or red, this may be a sign of an infection, and the piercing could reject and cause permanent damage. To prevent this from happening, follow Black Line Studio’s aftercare procedures stringently! Make sure to regularly clean the area and flush the piercing with warm salt water or saline solution.
