Piercing Location

Named after the famous actress, a monroe is a lip piercing placed on the left side of the upper lip, just like the legendary starlet’s signature beauty mark. A fashionable choice for anyone, the look is often achieved with a simple labret stud and small bead or gemstone.

Although traditionally seen with a stud, it can also be worn with a ring. The variety of jewelry options and ability to either tone the look up or down with more minimal or eye-catching choices helps keep this piercing style fresh. Effortlessly on trend, this style has thrived over the last few decades without falling out of grace, with notable celebrities like Amy Winehouse helping the look stay in the spotlight.

Often paired with other lip and mouth piercings, many combinations look pleasing coupled with a monroe. Sometimes, a monroe piercing is confused with the madonna, which is featured on the opposite side of the face.

Jewelry Options

Your piercer will guide you through the exciting process of selecting your favourite piece of jewelry. Labret studs are typically used as the jewelry style for the monroe piercing. Black Line Studio does not advise removal of jewelry for at least 4 to 6 weeks post your piercing service. Whether before or after the piercing is completely healed, when it comes to changing the jewelry, we recommend that you consult with your piercer.

Aftercare

When following Black Line Studio’s after care protocol, the healing time for a monroe piercing is typically 3 to 4 months. It is important to keep in mind that these times are estimates based on averages, and that everyone’s body heals differently. Monroe piercings are meant to last, but proper care and attention are necessary to ensure the process goes smoothly.

Use warm saline solution or water with salt to regularly rinse the area after meals and before bed. As with most lip and mouth piercings, it is normal to experience a fair amount of swelling in the initial days following the procedure. Avoid alcohol and the use of mouthwashes during the healing window, as they can negatively affect recovery. The most important factor is that you keep the piercing site clean and clear of any harmful irritants like dirt, makeup, and skin products not approved by your piercer.

Proper care and attention are tantamount to a successful healing process. Sometimes, lifestyle changes need to be considered for a new piercing to thrive. Smoking can also lead to infection in the area and rejection of the piercing.

Do not touch the piercing with your hands or tongue, and keep the area free of products that may cause irritation. When brushing your teeth, be careful not to disturb or tug at the piercing, as this will cause irritation and discomfort. The jewelry used by your piercer should be kept in until the site has completely healed.

After the first few weeks, swelling should recede and only tenderness will remain. If there is continued redness, swelling, pain and/or discharge in the area, an infection is likely and should be addressed promptly. In the instance there is any rejection of the jewelry during the healing process, it will need to be removed.

Frequently Asked Questions

A monroe piercing is located on the left side of the upper lip, not to be confused with a madonna, which sits on the opposite. The moniker comes from the piercing’s resemblance to Marilyn Monroe’s noteworthy beauty mark in the same location. While it can be tiresome to draw on this mark, it’s common to have the spot pierced permanently to create the aesthetic.

A madonna piercing, done with the same type of stud, is located on the right side of the upper lip — the opposite side of a Monroe piercing. Although they look similar, the distinction is important to note so that you can request the exact piercing you want! Both are named for famous women who left their mark on the world of fashion, so deciding between the two simply comes down to which side you’d rather have the piercing on. Sometimes, individuals choose to pair a monroe and a madonna together to achieve an unforgettable look!

As with any other piercing jewelry, you should wait until your Monroe piercing is fully healed before removing or changing it. No matter how tempting it may be to switch out for that new jewelry you bought, this can have detrimental side effects. Changing the jewelry too early can even potentially lead to losing the piercing and causing permanent damage. Before you do, make sure to visit with your piercer so they can check that the healing process has been completed without issues.

After you get the ok from your piercer, you can have fun accessorizing and choosing between the many different stud or ring styles available for monroe piercings! From minimal metal studs to crystals, gemstones, and charms, there are many ways to wear the piercing and make it your own.
