Dermal piercings are a unique type of piercing that is not quite comparable to any other type of facial or bodily piercing, due to their unconventional process, locations, and appearance. Also known as microdermal or single-point piercings, these piercings consist of jewelry that sits flat directly against the surface of the skin anywhere on the body.

Instead of a clear entry and exit point, this piercing instead sits directly under the surface of the skin, leading to a snug, flat appearance. Dermal piercings are usually carried out with the insertion of a small anchor beneath the skin, with the end sitting along the surface of the skin, usually screwed into a post.

While dermal piercings can be located anywhere on the body, they are most typically gotten on the collar bones, back, arms, hips, chest, or even beneath the eyes.

Piercing Location A dermal piercing is achieved by placing the anchor portion of the jewelry on almost any flat surface of the body. In dermal piercing, only one end of the embellishment is visible from the surface of the skin as the other end is embedded in the dermal layer of the skin, giving the appearance of small beads or jewels on the surface of the skin.

Jewelry Options – Your piercer will guide you through the exciting process of selecting your favourite piece of jewelry. Dermal piercing jewelry is comprised of two parts – an anchor and a top. Our piercers use high quality, implant grade titanium as the anchor given it is embedded in the skin. The top of the jewelry piece can be made from titanium, gold, silver, steel and many other kinds of material which can be interchangeable and achieve many looks as long as they are compatible with the anchor. Black Line Studio does not advise removal of dermal jewelry tops for at least 3 to 4 weeks post your piercing service. Whether before or after the piercing is completely healed, when it comes to changing the jewelry, we recommend that you consult with your piercer

Aftercare When following Black Line Studio’s after care protocol, the healing time for a dermal piercing is typically 8 -10 weeks. However, the exact time your dermal piercing takes to heal will ultimately depend on your body’s natural healing process and response to your new piercing.

Dermal piercings typically do not cause too much pain, although this depends largely on the location they are gotten in, as different parts of the body can have much greater or lower pain tolerances than others. In any case, dermal piercings will likely feel like a brief amount of pressure, followed by a pinch.

Throughout the healing process, it is important you keep your piercing site clean and dry, and covered with loose clothing in order to protect it from debris or possible dirt throughout the day. Make sure to clean your dermal piercing at least twice a day with salt water or a saline solution, gently wiping it with a paper towel and patting it dry or letting it air dry to avoid introducing any bacteria to the site.

While healing, keep your dermal piercing away from swimming pools or long showers, and try to prevent anything from getting caught in your piercing, such as hair or clothing. In addition, stay away from overly strenuous exercise, as sweating may introduce bacteria to the piercing site, putting it at risk of infection.

Frequently Asked Questions

There is no clear timeline for dermal piercings, as this largely depends on the piercing location, as well as your body’s response to your piercing and your aftercare practices. However, over time, your skin will begin to grow new layers and push the anchor of the piercing up towards the surface, until it eventually exits the skin and falls out.

If maintained properly, your dermal piercing can last a number of years before beginning to experience any kind of negative effects.

Dermal piercings do not usually hurt too much, feeling more like pressure and a brief pinch than any more intensive type of pain. However, this also depends on your tolerance for pain, as well as the location of the piercing on your body, as different areas of your skin can have different levels of sensitivity.

Dermal piercings are usually safe to get, as they do not pose any major types of hazards to keep in mind beyond the risk of infection that every piercing carries if not properly cared for. However, dermal piercings do carry the chance of tissue damage over time if your piercing becomes rejected down the line.
