Cheek piercings have a long and rich history, with evidence of their use dating back to ancient times. Small cheek piercings have been popular among many different cultures around the world, from Native Americans and Aztecs to African tribes and even Indian royalty.

The Aleutian Islands offer some of the earliest evidence of this distinctive form of body adornment: hunters there used cheek piercings as an artifact to give them an uncanny resemblance to a seal's whiskers.

In modern times, cheek surface piercings have become a popular trend among teens and young adults. Dermal piercings on the upper cheeks are a popular way to add some extra sparkle and excitement to an outfit, or to give your look a unique edge.

Dermal cheek piercings are also relatively easy to maintain, and have become the go-to piercing for those who want a subtle yet edgy look.

Piercing Location To achieve cheek piercings the oral cavity and perforate through the skin of the cheek is carefully perforated. Cheek piercings may accentuate your existing dimples, or create the appearance of dimples for those who don’t have them.

Black Line Studio does not advise removal of jewelry for at least 6 to 8 weeks post your piercing service. Aftercare

Aftercare When following Black Line Studio’s after care protocol, the healing time for cheek piercings is typically 8 to 12 months.

Cheek piercings are relatively low maintenance, but it’s important to follow the aftercare instructions given by your piercing professional.

The most important tip is to avoid touching them!

You should also keep them clean and dry and make sure you use a sterile saline wash or, alternatively, a mild body wash. Be sure to apply an antibacterial cream when necessary, such as during healing periods or if irritation occurs.

Using a longer bar while the piercing is healing can make it more comfortable and reduce the risk of irritation. Finally, don't change the piercing for at least 2-3 months after you've had it done – your skin needs time to heal.

At Black Line Studio, we guarantee our customers the highest quality products and services with every cheek; your piercer can talk you through the aftercare steps in the shop.

Cheek Piercings FAQ

If you have ever gotten an ear lobe piercing, then cheek piercings should feel quite similar - your experience with one may provide some context and insight into what to expect with the other.

The piercing process only lasts a short period of time, so there's no need to worry about having to endure a great deal of pain for a longer duration. Plus, most who have gotten their cheeks pierced report that the pain is manageable and fades quickly in comparison to some other forms of body modification.

In short, it's nothing unbearable!

Many people assume that these piercings have some sort of spiritual connection or personal meaning, but not everyone understands why. When viewed from an anthropology standpoint, cheek piercings can be a way to assert one's identity and honour ancestral traditions.

By carrying on traditional practices generations later, people are able to preserve their cultural heritage as well as express themselves. Thus, by wearing cheek piercings, individuals are given a chance to keep up with their heritage while still establishing their own personal style.

Therefore, cheek piercings represent an interesting combination of identity expression and familial tradition among modern-day societies.

Studies show that facial piercings can be damaging to oral health and cause tooth impairment, depending on the placement of the piercing and its length. Orthodontists recommend that those who choose to get cheek piercings should make sure they have a short barbell or stud placed on the inside of the cheek with an upward angle to reduce potential negative effects.

Taking additional precautions like regularly flossing, brushing twice daily, and visiting your dentist frequently can help reduce the risk of potential dental damage and ensure you keep your pearly whites sparkling for years to come.
