Tattoo Removal

Posted by admin in: Tattoos on

We are all taught at a very young age that tattoos are forever and that you better be darn sure that you can live with your tattoo for the rest of your life. While this is great information and should be followed when thinking about getting a tattoo, it isn’t necessarily true. There are ways to get that unwanted tattoo removed, granted all of the procedures that are used are time consuming, expensive and painful. Also people should know that insurance will not help pay for it so you will have to pay for everything out of your own pocket. So one should not go into getting a tattoo with the thought of, Oh I can get it removed later if I don’t want it anymore. You should save yourself the money, time and pain and just not get a tattoo in the first place.

The three methods that are used to remove unwanted tattoos are as follows:

    • Laser surgery. Laser tattoo removal is the most common procedure that people go through to reduce the appearance of a tattoo. How it works is pulses of laser light pass through the top layer of skin where the light’s energy is absorbed by the tattoo pigment. This then creates a very low grade inflammation and allows your body to process the small areas of altered pigment. You will require several session to get rid of your tattoo or lighten it up enough to were it is barely noticeable. But people should know that this process might not completely erase your tattoo.

    • Dermabrasion. The process is done when the tattooed area is chilled until numb, once the skin is numb the tattooed area is sanded down. As you can imagine this process is very painful and will more than likely cause some scarring.

    • Surgical removal. Just like with anything a doctor can surgically cut out your unwanted tattoo and literally stitch the edges of your skin back together. However, this will more than likely leave a scar as well.

There is also a forth option to remove your unwanted tattoo:

    • Cover Up. Many people grow tired of the tattoo they had for 14 years, it  is probably not done very well since it was done in someone's basement. This happens all the time- and our artists here at Black Line Studio will work with you to cover up that old unwanted tattoo if laser removal is not for you. If you are interested in having one of our artist work with you on a cover up design- source out a few references and come by the studio anytime for a free consultation.

The best piece of advice is just to pick out a tattoo you can live with the rest of your life. Getting the tattoo removed is more painful and costly than actually getting the tattoo.
